Returning to Work After Maternity Leave

Me And Albie Oxo

This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is “Inspire Inclusion”, with the aim of ensuring that everyone is able to access the same opportunities. At Rendall & Rittner, we really value the diversity of our people, and understand the importance of the different skillsets, backgrounds and ideas that this brings.

For many people, returning to work after time away for maternity or paternity leave can be incredibly daunting and we believe that it is important to support our people throughout this transition to ensure that they can maintain a healthy work-life balance. We recently spoke to Executive Assistant, Emma Howell, about her experiences returning to work at Rendall & Rittner earlier this year following her maternity leave.

How did you feel about returning to work after your maternity leave?

I couldn’t believe a year had gone so quickly! I felt sad that my maternity leave was coming to an end, but equally excited for the next chapter and getting settled into our new routine. I certainly felt more comfortable with the whole scenario as I would be working from home. My son’s nursery is also only 10 minutes down the road which has definitely taken a lot of anxiety out of the change.

Did you keep in contact with the Rendall & Rittner team during your maternity leave? If so, how did that help your transition back to work?

Yes, I kept in contact with many people. I did a few ‘keeping in touch’ (KIT) days towards the end of my maternity leave and I was invited to all the social occasions throughout the year, which was really lovely – I never felt left out or forgotten. It really helped having those meet-ups and text exchanges with different people whilst I was away as it helped me to still feel part of the company.

How are you finding the transition back into work?

I am really enjoying being back! I feel like I have just slotted back in, and the role seems to have come back to me very easily. I have been very lucky that I have been able to change my working arrangements so that I now work three days a week from home, which has provided a great balance for me. I think the hardest part for me, which I am still getting used to, is finishing work at 5:30 and then switching into my mum role straight away.

How is Rendall & Rittner supporting your wellbeing during your return to work?

When I approached Rendall & Rittner about changing my days, I was met with nothing but support. They were open to my request, and we discussed as a team how it would work going forward. I feel very fortunate to work for a company that supports and listens to its people and works with them to ensure both business and the individuals are getting the best.

How is your work/life balance?

Currently, I feel that the balance is really good. Whilst my son is still young, having those two extra days in the week with him are invaluable and I am very grateful that I get to have them. But equally, I am really enjoying having the days in the week where I work and get to use my skill set and being who I was before I became a mum.
